The noise grew louder when he stirred in his silk sheets, tangling himself around them as he rolled onto his stomach. He pulled a pillow over his head, but the beeping didn’t stop. Adam rolled onto his back and glanced across his bedroom at the picture window; he nearly fell onto the floor as the daylight blinded his still sleepy eyes. He stretched his arm to the left, realizing that the beeping was indeed coming from his alarm clock on the bedside table, and switched off the alarm. The beeping silenced immediately and Adam ran his fingers through his tangled hair, a frustrated groan escaped from his lips. He hadn’t planned on staying out as late as he had last night. Between the few drug runs he had completed, the drinks he had downed at the bar, and the house party he had attended afterwards it was nearly 4 am once Adam drunkenly stumbled into his apartment. The only good news this morning was that he had actually fallen asleep, undressed in his own bed. Unfortunately, the bad news outweighed the good; his head was pounding, he was late for his shift down at the beach, and he had no clue where exactly his girlfriend was or if he’d even stumbled home with her last night.
Adam flung the sheets from his body and swung his legs out of the bed. A chill shot through his spine as his feet touched the cold, hardwood flooring. He groaned again, burying his face into the palms of his hands; first things first, Adam needed Advil for his pounding head. He stood to his feet and padded across the hallway into his bathroom, retrieved the small bottle of Advil from the medicine cabinet, and dry swallowed two of the pills. Since he had apparently stripped himself of all clothing in his drunken state last night, Adam flipped on the shower taps and stepped into the shower, the lukewarm water slowly sobering him up.
A few moments later, Adam was dressed and gathering his belongings from the kitchen counter. He stuffed his wallet, car keys, and cell phone into the pockets of his shorts and slid his feet into a pair of black flip-flops. He glanced at the time before heading out of his apartment; thankfully, his boss wouldn’t be at the beach on a Saturday, so Adam would be able to sneak into his shift 45 minutes late without a lecture regarding his tardiness. He locked his door and hopped down the rickety steps to his beat-up Ford Mustang. After a short drive and a near miss with a red light, Adam was strolling toward the lifeguard shack, trying his best to avoid eye contact with his co-workers. “Rough night, Adam?” a co-worker teased as Adam punched in on his time sheet. Adam responded with a smirk.
He retreated down to the water and stopped just so the waves could whisk up and wet his feet. The beach was crowded, typical for a hot Saturday in Miami.

The room was black as night thanks to the new dark purple curtains. The darkness and lack of any digital clocks made time and space seem unknown. Scarlet had woken up a couple of times but she had trouble telling the darkness of the room from the inside of her eyelids. Everything felt like a dream, like she was floating along a lazy river that she couldn't and didn't want to get out of. Half asleep Scarlet laid sprawled out on the floor beside her bed. She was curled up with a quilt and pillow that she dragged down there with her in her drunken stooper. In her mind she was laying in a boat floating along that lazy river. Her relaxed hand leaned over the side of the boat so she could touch the water. Suddenly a fish came up and slapped her in the arm. She removed her arm from the water but soon she let it lean out of the boat again. Soon another fish slapped her in the arm, and another right after that...
Browser hovered over Scarlet on the ground. His saggy basset hound eyes studied her and every once in a while he would flip her arm up with his cold wet nose. After a couple times of trying to wake her by nudging her, Browser let out an alarmingly loud bark. Scar was rudely yanked out of her lazy river and thrown into a cruel dark world where her head pounded. "Ah, oh why." she whimpered as she felt around the room in a confused half-drunk trance. Finally her hands felt up the oak in table she laid besides and her fingers pulled at the lamp switch. Light poured into the room but she was ready and already had her eyes squeezed shut. Browser barked again in attempt to be noticed by Scarlet, and the bark rang through her head like a train.
"Okay!" Scarlet snapped although she knew the poor dog was probably just starving. He had gone without food since yesterday evening and it was...Scarlet shifted around her in-table drawer until she found a wrist watch. 2:30pm. Scarlet puffed out her cheeks and ran a hand across her face. She was sure she had off today but she searched for her phone to check for missed calls just in case. It took her a while to find her cell, which was shoved in the back pocket of last night jeans that were balled up in the bathroom. Thankfully no one called or texted her.
In the shower she realized just how much that sucked. That no one tried to get in contact with her all day. Her night was a blurry puzzle with several missing pieces. She was sure she went to the party with Adam though. But how she got home was a haze. What if she was dead in a ditch somewhere? The animals would of had her devoured by the time anyone noticed she was gone. The thought sort of made her angry which was why she decided to just not text or call anyone herself. As if it was her boyfriends job to text her first Scarlet stubbornly decided to not text or call him as well. As if it was teaching him some lesson or something. Scarlet sucked down some pot out of a joint on her apartments balcony to aid her headache. Then after she inhaled two packets of ramen noodles she decided that she was going to text Adam. But as she stared at her cellphone she re-decided to just pay him a visit at work, where she was sure he was.
So after she threw on a black bikini and a cover up skirt she gathered up her stuff and drove her jeep to the beach. Which was crowded and the sun still hurt her head, and everything in her wanted to turn back and go home. Right when she was about to turn back to her jeep she caught the familiar backside of Adam. A smirk played across her lips and she snatched up a beach ball that was near her feet, which she had no idea who owned, and chucked it at the back of his head.
